OCS Academic Team Starts Season as District Leaders

The OCS Academic Team competed in the OSSAA Academic Bowl Class 4A district seeding tournament on October 14th in Kingfisher.

The team expected to play two games, one against Kingfisher and one against ASTEC High School. Unfortunately, ASTEC doesn't have a team this year. So, according to the rules, OCS and Kingfisher needed to play two games against each other and send the results to OSSAA for brackets to be built for the Regional tournament later this month.

The two games against Kingfisher both ended with OCS winning by a significant amount. Captain Grace Kendrick said it was a confidence boost that the team needed. "We are in great shape to hopefully place in regionals, she said."

Academic Bowl is a quiz bowl competition organized by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. The season begins with district seeding in October, followed by a regional tournament in November, Area tournament in January, and state championship tournament in late January or early February. The OCS team won last year's regional tournament.

Academic team coach Holly Emig says, "We have a team of almost all seniors this year, so we have a lot of experience. They are well-rounded and know a lot of subjects. Grace knows the arts. Elizabeth knows literature and grammar. Aynsley knows pop culture and animals. William knows sports and history. We also have a new members on the team this year, sophomores Millie Emig and Phillip Mitchell."

This is Elizabeth Kendrick's second year on the team. She said, "I thought it was a great start to the season. Everyone on our team did such a great job, and I can't wait to keep our winning streak going into regionals!"

The regional tournament takes place on November 16 at Jones High School. The "brainiacs in blue" ask that you say a quick prayer for them that day.
