The Saints baseball team had an outstanding day on the field as they faced off against the Blackwell Maroons in a thrilling doubleheader at their home field.
Game 1
As is customary in baseball, the home team, in this case, the Saints, started by pitching first, while the Maroons took to the bats.
The action-packed day began with
Wyatt Fitzgerald taking the pitcher's mound for the Saints in the first game. Right from the start, Wyatt showcased his pitching abilities, delivering pitches that were just too much for the Maroons to handle.
The Saints wasted no time in establishing their dominance. In an impressive display of teamwork and skill, they managed to score an impressive 10 runs in the very first inning, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Despite their best efforts, the Maroons could not make any runs.
The Run Rule
In high school baseball, there's a special rule called the mercy rule, or 'run rule.' This rule comes into play if a team is winning by 10 runs or more after five innings. In this game, the Saints' strong performance triggered the mercy rule. It ended after five innings with a final score of 13-0.
Game 2
With the first game secured in their favor, the Saints moved on to the second game of the doubleheader. This time, freshman
WARNER NIELD took over pitching duties for the Saints.
In a turn of events, the Blackwell Maroons managed to put up a stronger offensive effort in the second game, scoring four runs against the Saints. However, despite their improved performance, it wasn't enough to overcome the Saints' formidable defense and batting prowess.
The game concluded with a final score of 14-4 in favor of the Saints, once again invoking the run rule and securing another victory for the home team.
Summary
Sophomore manager
Evi Oaks remarked that "a highlight of the day was the batting performances by several Saints players:
Spencer Schwandt,
Spencer Stevens, and
Hudson Able all scored home runs." This further added to the Saints' lead and solidified their dominance on the field.
Additionally, the decision to host a doubleheader was a strategic one for the Saints. It allowed them to play both of their important district games without the need to travel to Blackwell, which is around 3 and a half hours away by car.
Overall, it was a triumphant day for the Saints baseball team, as they showcased their talent, teamwork, and determination, securing two important wins and further cementing their position as a force to be reckoned with in their district.
