2-3 Loss in Semifinals

Lady Saints Soccer team concedes a goal in double over time, but our girls fought for their lives in the 4A State Semifinals.

They started the game at 7 o'clock and while adjusting within the first few minutes, they played a lot of defense. The first half was a battle for the ball back and forth between OCS and Oolagah-Talala, so neither team scored in the first 40 minutes.

Not too long into the second half, Sheridan Piercey had a spectacular run down the flanks and scored the first goal of the night. However, the Mustangs responded with a goal just minutes after. Our Saints kept battling throughout the game, but let a second goal in from the other team, making it 1-2. Senior Sheridan came in clutch for the team with her incredible tenacity and got another goal for herself and the team. This goal came late in the game, keeping their state hopes alive before going into overtime.

In overtime, there are two halves of ten minutes, and whoever scores first wins. If neither team scores, each team selects five girls to partake in the penalty shootout.

The first half was hopeful for the girls as they stayed calm and held off the Mustangs well. Then the unthinkable happened with only three minutes left in over time. The center referee made an atrocious and unnecessary call for a penalty kick when #21 for Oolagah-Talala dramatically flopped in the eighteen yard box. Goalkeeper Lily Pomeroy did her best to save it, but the golden goal was made, which ended the remarkable season for our Lady Saints Soccer team.

It is safe to say that if this ridiculous call had not been made, OCS would have won state. The two reasons to support this are: the Lady Saints have been undefeated in penalty kick shootouts for two years running, and the team on the other side of the bracket in the finals is Weatherford, which OCS has already beat.

Head Coach Juan Castillo says that "playing with 2 subs all season yet managed to accomplish some amazing results... All I can say is that the girls fought hard, were the better team, and sometimes the human error tends to go in favor of the opposite team in doubtful plays."

Sophomore captain, Mia Chesley, remembers how "this season was so fun. We overcame so many obstacles and went further than anyone thought we would. I think the reason why we did so well is because we all got so close with one another on such a small team and loved each other so well. I'll be sad to see the seniors leave because this team was special."
