What Drills Make Tennis Players Great?

Tennis is a fast-paced and exciting sport that combines skill, strategy, and athleticism. The OCS tennis team works on many drills to grow in their skills and strategies. Some of the most important drills that they do include, serving, ground strokes, forehand and backhand swings, footwork, and volleys.

The serve is one of the most important shots in tennis. To get better at serving, the OCS team does target practice by aiming for specific spots in the service box. This helps improve accuracy. Another good drill that many of the athletes practice, is the second serve. Focusing on getting the ball in play consistently and avoiding mistakes under pressure, helps win matches.

Ground strokes—basic forehands and backhands—are essential for keeping rallies going. One of the best drills the tennis team does is a cross court rally with a partner. This helps them work on control, depth, and consistency.

To really improve their forehands and backhands, the team tries a drill where you hit alternating foreheads and backhands. This helps them get comfortable switching between strokes. They also do the two-ball drill, where you hit two shots in a row with each stroke. This helps with timing and getting the ball in the right spot on the court.

Tennis is all about being quick on your feet. To work on footwork, the Saints tennis team does the ladder drill using an agility ladder. This helps them move faster and more efficiently. Another useful drill is the side-to-side lateral, where the team shuffles back and forth across the baseline to practice lateral movement.

Volleys are key when a player is at the net. A simple drill to the team practices is the volley-to-volley drill with a coach. Stand near the net and pass volleys back and forth. This will help you with quick reflexes and touch. You can also try the volley with movement drill, where you practice moving to the net after each ground stroke and then hitting volleys.

These drills are the building blocks of what makes the OCS team great. Whether they're working on their serve, ground strokes, or footwork, these exercises help the team improve. With lots of practice, and staying focused, this team could go far in state!
