Sports Media Class: What is it?

In the Sports Media class, taught by Holly Emig, students focus on OCS athletics. They get to hone their storytelling skills while promoting the school's athletic programs. The course blends creativity and journalism, allowing students to write uplifting stories that capture the spirit of the school's teams and their athletes. Through interviews, game coverage, and feature articles, students learn to convey the excitement and challenges of OCS sports, fostering a greater appreciation for the dedication and talent of the athletes.

Holly Emig encourages a fun, collaborative environment where humor and creativity flourish. Students often undertake projects that infuse lightheartedness into their work, from playful video segments to quirky social media campaigns that resonate with the school community. This unique approach not only enhances their writing and communication skills but also strengthens their connection to the athletic programs. "There is so much natural talent in this year's students. All I have to do is point to a game or story and they come back with a creative video package that everyone can enjoy. Best of all, they give God the glory," Emig says.

Student Graham Smith adds, "I think sports media has taught me a lot about sports production and promotion and I've really enjoyed working on projects that I love!"

Ultimately, the Sports Media class empowers students to become confident storytellers while promoting school spirit. By balancing informative content with humor and creativity, they effectively highlight the achievements and camaraderie of OCS sports, making their work enjoyable for both the athletes and the broader community.

The skills gained in this class extend beyond the classroom, equipping students for future endeavors in media and communications. Perhaps we'll see their names and faces on national sports productions in the future.
