Coming into the first week of the 2024-2025 football season, the rugged Oklahoma Christian School Saints clashed armor with the Christian Heritage Academy Crusaders in what ended in a instant classic.
Going into the game, OCS knew coming into it that they would have a lot to do. It was a brand new year, and OCS had lost all starters on Offense and Defense due to graduation from the seniors. Now the shoes were destined to be filled.
Starting off the game, OCS got off to a very slow start as penalties and mishaps would set them back down 13-0 late in the first half. Going into halftime, OCS desperately needed something to get the fire lit. Looking for a spark of hope, they got it.
I was out of the game with a concussion so I was not in the locker room during halftime but by the sound of the tiny locker room, there was rumblings so loud I thought the door was gonna just fall over. The team was out for blood coming out of that locker room. It was game on in the eyes of the Saints.
Starting the 3rd quarter OCS finally began to find a rhythm offensively and began a run of their own. With 1 second left in the 3rd quarter, Quarterback
Wyatt Fitzgerald threw a long ball downfield to
James Huffmyer who fought off the CHA defender going all the way for 73 yards. OCS was back in it heading into the 4th quarter.
All the sudden, Freshman kicker
BROOKS RAY sent a kick flying and the ball was muffed by CHA which ended up in the arms of the Saints.
" I was overwhelmed with excitement" said Brooks.
OCS was back on offense at the 20 yard line and few quick check downs, eventually
WYATT FITZGERALD threw a hitch to Junior Wide Receiver
HUDSON ABLE who broke free and darted into the end zone. Just like that, OCS tied the game in a span of only 1 minute! Something they had not done all of the first half.
With another kickoff by Freshman
BROOKS RAY, it happened again, another fumble recovery for OCS!
HUDSON ABLE hit the returner knocking the ball loose, and it was recovered by sophomore
Drew Matthews OCS would then give the ball back to CHA after failing to move the ball.
"I credit
Noah Wohlgemuth and John Michael Crooks for my performance" said Ray when asked about what gave him the inspiration to land both kicks perfectly.
With 1 minute left, OCS held their own by stopping CHA from gaining any yardage. With time ticking down, CHA thought the clock would run out by taking a knee. However, CHA took a knee with 1 second left! A huge mistake as it ended up being a turnover to OCS.
Then, in dramatic fashion, the Saints had time for one more play. With no time left,
Wyatt Fitzgerald let it fly on the run, launching it to Junior wide receiver
Eli Winter to win on the final play of the game crowing this game as a instant classic. The game ended 19-13 in favor of OCS. This one will be remembered for awhile and go down as one of the wildest endings to a High School Game ever!
