OCSN at the NCAA D1 Wrestling Tournament

This past weekend was the 94th annual NCAA Division Ones National Wrestling Championship tournament. I'm DAX LOPEZ a reporter for our vary own school athletics page and I got the privilege to attend this outstanding event. As a wrestler myself getting to go to this tournament and seeing one of the biggest stages in the sport of wrestling was a dream come true.

History was made, upsets happened, and champions were crowned. The tournament is a three day long grind, for wrestlers from various schools in a double elimination tournament. There are 330 wrestlers across ten weight classes coming from seven different conferences, but only one can take home the national title.

As the individual wrestlers compete for gold, as they win matches they get points for there team to win a team title. For the past four years Penn State has proven to be the college wrestling worlds powerhouse winning many team titles, including this years.

This year the NCAA tournament had the honor of the 45th and 47th president of the United States, Donald Trump, be in attendance this year. It is always great to see our leaders support events and the sports of our country.

Some big news out of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State had two national champions, one runner up, and finishing with six total All-Americans. New head coach David Taylor had one of the best rookie seasons ever, taking home a team trophy of 3rd place. OK State is growing to be the dominant team it once was.

Heavyweight wrestler Wyatt Hendrickson out of Oklahoma State pulled off on of the Biggest upsets in NCAA wrestling history. With thirty seconds left in the last period of the match, Wyatt was down by one point. Staying patient waiting for his moment he took a last second shot, he stayed committed and ended up taking his opponent down winning the national title. His opponent was 4x All-American, 2x national champion and Olympic Gold Medalist, Gable Steveson.

Hendrickson was asked about the match saying, "Going out there I was courageous. - That was the mindset I had to have, was to act like I wanted to be a champion and wrestle like I wanted to be a champion," and it worked out in his favor.

This was the match of the night, I am privileged to be able to witness it in person, truly outstanding.
